Our own Chief Technical Officer, Keith Weerts was on an industry panel this afternoon that looks to explore how he has led Blentech into a new phase of growth and large-scale digital transformation using Induction Automation.

We began using Induction Automation in 2016, due to low start-up costs, later realizing how easy it was to use, especially compared to our previous automation software. In order for Blentech to stay ahead of the curve in regards to digital transformation, we need to not only think about our customer’s needs, but also to anticipate their problems. Major issues world-wide have increased costs due to supply chain shortages, labor shortages, and inflation. With the assistance of Induction, we’ve helped our customer’s to minimize those effects. A quote from Keith at ICC22, “What we sell nowadays is not so much machines, but capacity. Blentech can help increase capacity just by looking at your data! Life prior to Salesforce was a chaotic place; we used MAS for work ticket creation and Microsoft Access database created a cut, sheer and requisition list. Those were essentially our work orders. Most of requisitioning was done by post it notes left on the purchasing managers desk! The hardest part was Accounting had to manage all sales orders for every type of revenue activity. Now, our project managers, service, and parts leads create and manage all sales orders through PPSI and Accounting only needs to focus on collections and payment of vendors.

Blentech started using Salesforce in 2015 for lead and opportunity management for Sales and case management for Service and Parts which is when we realized (lightbulb moment) that keeping everything in the same place, from start to finish, on a common platform was the obvious strategy. We were still facing serious issues with revision and document control so in 2018 we decided to invest in Propel (a tool on the Salesforce Platform) for BOM and Project Management. Then we added Rootstock (another tool on the Salesforce Platform) in 2021 for everything else, from work orders to procurement to financials! Ever since that lightbulb moment, they have been supporting us in connecting our supply chains with real-time data on one unified platform!

Blentech will always be working toward continuous improvement and data informed decision making, not data driven. We will never complete our digital transformation because we will never be done improving. As long as there are new people, techniques, and technologies, Blentech will always have continuous improvement initiatives.

Blentech launched today their frontline cooking equipment in pre-engineered versions drastically reducing both price and delivery time. Pre-engineered solutions are derived from their most popular engineered parents having decades of proven usage in the food industry. This move directly benefits food processors by making a huge impact to allow for every budget and timeline. Prices are targeted to drop up to 50% while lead times are estimated to be as short as 12-16 weeks for all pre-engineered products!

For over 30 years, Blentech’s cooking equipment has been based on a horizontal design that brings several benefits to food producers but used to require a higher capital expenditure in comparison to traditional kettles. Pre-engineered designs have now allowed Blentech to reach the price parity of kettles. As production demands rise, the hemispherical kettles (similar in profile to a vertical pot in your kitchen) can now be economically upgraded to more effective pre-engineered solutions. In today’s modern food factories, horizontal cookers have become a necessity to meet the requirements for larger heating area, to develop flavors through complex processes like maillard browning and caramelization. This means a boon for the food processors as they can now readily improve their product quality, develop more flavorful foods as well as shorten their cooking time. 

Despite market uncertainty and the high costs of food production, food processors can now rely on quick to market proven equipment to drive their  production output, cost effectiveness or to simply maintain business continuity. 

Daniel Voit, CEO of Blentech mentioned “Cost effectiveness of pre-engineered solutions does not imply less features but evolution of our manufacturing technique and strategic elimination of engineering overheads. In fact, our pre-engineered models are designed to include features that exceed most equipment currently sold in the market.”

In general the manufacturing Industry suffers with longer lead times, Blentech’s pre-engineered solutions are designed to reduce time to get to production quicker which in turns reduces time to get their food to market.

One of the highlights of walking the halls of the Blentech office is hearing the boisterous laugh of DuWayne Geigle, Blentech’s Shop Foreman.  DuWayne, or as he is affectionately called by the Blentech team, Geigle, has been with Blentech as one of the original team members when Blentech was founded in 1986.  This week we are celebrating his time with Blentech and his recent retirement on July 15th, 2022 after an amazing 36 years of service.

Duwayne started as a welder in 1978 at Custom Stainless and eventually moved into the Welder Foreman and later, Shop Foreman roles. Then in 1981, Custom Stainless became CSE. In 1986, Darrell Horn (current Chairman and Owner) started Blentech and DuWayne was one of the employees who stayed on.  Back in 1986 when there were approximately 15 Blentech employees, with most being in the factory.  Now we have grown to over six times that with DuWayne overseeing the factory production for the past three and a half decades.

It is no shock that DuWayne is such a longstanding and hardworking employee.  A wonderful storyteller, he shared recently about his experiences growing up.  “Mom taught us the value of hard work.  As a kid, every Saturday before we’d go out and play we’d line up at 8 am and pick chores out of a hat.  If we had to clean the floors we’d get on our hands and knees with a rag, no mop!”  And that dedication certainly showed in his work – he is thorough, detailed, and also ensures the job is done right.  He also encourages and inspires others to work hard and do their best too.

Over the last few weeks as we’ve shared stories of how DuWayne has motivated, inspired and encouraged us. Those who have worked with him for many years shared some great quotes and anecdotes with us.  Doug Duncan, Service Technician, shared with us the story about when he was first hired by DuWayne to work in the Blentech factory over 15 years ago. DuWayne ensured Doug that he could start with Blentech right after being hired so he wouldn’t be long between jobs.  “Duwayne is a great guy. He has always led with compassion and concern for his workers. His care for people’s personal lives has always been present.  He has always gone the extra mile to accommodate the issues we all have in our lives. Duwayne cares about the individuals that have worked for him. He will always be appreciated for what he has done for me.”

Whether it was him formally chatting in his office on a project, being called over to someone’s desk for a quick question, or just over a lunch, game of cards or break time interaction, DuWayne was always willing to answer questions about any and every project.  It was no shock to anyone when he stopped on his way out the door on his last day to answer questions about a project from 34 years ago!

The impact that DuWayne Geigle has had on Blentech in both his work in production, as well as his positive impact on the entire Blentech team as a warm, caring leader who listened, joked, laughed and mentored brings so much joy to all who worked with him.  Thank you DuWayne for your dedication to Blentech and congratulations on your retirement!

• Tell me about the projects you’ve worked on at Blentech. I’ve worked on more than 700 new equipment installations in my life.  They average around 3,000-5,000 pounds per hour so depending on the equipment, I’ve worked on probably feed 500,000 people per hour.
• Anything else you’d like to share about your education from BAE and how it enhances the work you do at Blentech? My education at Davis changed my life.  I was able to work on a NASA grant to make equipment for a manned mission to Mars.  I learned about the fundamentals of food process engineering, methods of technology selection and ways of improving the efficiency of processing equipment.    I also met some amazing people who challenged me in ways that made me a better employee and a better person.

The variety of courses offered by the EBS program and BAE were an invaluable part of my education. By having a broad understanding of many engineering principles it’s allowed me to be extremely flexible in my career and the projects that I work on.
